  • Something to keep in mind.
Many adults are quick to assume kids are disrespectful and need to be punished and/or disciplined. When we jump to that assumption or react, we miss the most important moments and steps to connect with kids and work together to understand what is actually going on.

Kids aren't born with the skills we expect them to show when things get tough. If parents struggle to control or regulate their emotions, how can we expect kids to know or learn that skill? Sometimes even as adults, we have on-going work to do on ourselves, especially if we have executive function issues (common in ADHD and ASD).

  • This is so true! Still so much misunderstanding and misinformation out there.

  • I often think my dogs are the ones my younger clients look forward to seeing. 😆 Yesterday, one of the kids I coach helped plan out his time for our session. Time management is an executive function problem for many ADHDers, and this is a great way for kids to help plan, prioritise, and keep an eye on time. For the last 5 mins I told him he can choose what activity we do (it's like a reward for doing the work, which he did so well). Green is his colour/time. The last five mins can be a game, activity, chat...but often they ask if they can pat the dogs (my 2 Bernese Mountain dogs and Moodle patiently wait hoping they'll be asked to play (or work!). That last 5 minutes is filled with extra excitement, energy and laughter. He left with the biggest smile, and I had some very happy doggos! 😊
  • I like this.

Kids with ADHD may also have a developmental delay in executive functions (the cognitive management system of the brain, responsible for planning, problem-solving, organisation, working memory, self-regulation, task initiation etc.)
While the neurotypical individual develops full executive function between the ages of 21 and 25 years, the typical individual with ADHD often develops at a rate of 3-5 years (or 30%) behind non-ADHD peers.

It's hard to know what is ahead for our kids when every day we see the struggles ADHD brings. As parents, we become pretty good at helping them push through them and often help them cover up the struggles, so others don't see them. Unfortunately, that doesn't help in adulthood when the basic skills haven't been built. That is where ADHD coaching can really help kids and teenagers. People with ADHD will learn those skills differently to their neurotypical peers #adhd #adhdcoaching #executivefunctionskills #neurodiversity #neurodiversesquad
